Bathing suit shopping is a mandatory task before heading off on your beach vacation, unless, of course, your destination is the fabled French Riviera, where anything goes. Purchasing the suit by itself, however, is just the beginning. Comparable to the icing on the cake, beach accessories can make or break any beach look, and can be functional, fashionable, and with the right advice, both! Gone are the days in which last year’s suit alone will do, especially in Los Cabos, where beaches and pools are the places to see and be seen. Whether looking for something that diminishes the lumps and bumps that some of us show in swimwear, or opting to follow a doctor’s orders and avoid sun exposure, there are innumerable beach accessories that can help, and all are sold in Los Cabos shops.

Displaying a large supply of apparel and accessories perfect for the beach is Animale, located near the main entrance inside Cabo´s Puerto Paraíso mall. From light, beautifully printed dresses and tops to sunglasses and quality jewelry, you’ll find it all in this upscale boutique. One of the things that sets this shop apart from the competition is that the store’s owner, Joan Harrison, also serves as a designer, bringing the original clothing and sea-inspired sandals from her factory in Bali, Indonesia. Beautiful ladies´ footwear comes in various styles here, embellished with beads and even seashells.

Using 100% cotton, all clothing is soft and light. Additionally, 100% crinkle-free cotton clothing is now available, made with cotton that requires no ironing, making it ideal for travel. For around $18.00 US, the very latest trends in eyewear are also sold at Animale. No longer called knock-offs, these “inspired by” sunglasses mimic the latest Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, and Lacoste trends. Another way to jazz up any beach ensemble is with quality jewelry. Animale carries real freshwater pearls from Singapore, in a variety of styles. Open Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm. (624) 144-3311.

Another fun place to turn for functionality and fashion, when looking for something to top off the basic beach look, is Cabo Hats. With four locations in Cabo, this store is sure to have the style, color, and texture to please you. Carrying the Scala brand, created by the U.S. supplier Dorfman Pacific, the options here are almost overwhelming. These hand-made Scala hats are not only great to wear but also provide important sun protection. From visors and baseball caps to stylish gardening hats and trendy Fedoras, the wall-to-wall display leaves no one’s needs unmet. Even country music fans were taken into consideration when Dorfman Pacific signed artist Toby Keith to oversee his own brand of stylish cowboy hats, all the rage these days, made of the same crushable material of so many other popular styles. Men’s, women’s, and children’s hats can be found in every color of the rainbow, and varying shades in between, different sizes, and prices to suit anyone’s budget. Canvas, straw, and cotton are just a few of the ideal fabrics made to breathe and last for many vacations to come. Store locations: (1) Blvd. Marina & Madero. (2) Plaza Embarcadero L#10; (3) Puerto Paraiso, Loc. #81; (4) in plaza next to Wal-Mart.

Pretty and practical sarongs, shirts, and dresses for beach and evening wear are found at both The Cotton Club and Tropico Calipso. The range of colors and styles makes anyone feel special and ready for that stylish day at the beach. Daytime chic includes pareas, sarongs, and sundresses that are always appropriate for beach and resort wear. There are many ways to wrap the pareas, so it’s easy to wear them as a dress or a skirt, and look fabulous either way. The easy flowing material and design make pareas a cool choice for beachwear.

Preparing for hot sand and sun requires attention, too. Fun, fancy, or functional sandals, water shoes; snorkel gear; a bamboo mat or gorgeously plush towel; and a shading beach umbrella, will all make your beach day a great day. Check out some Tuugi umbrellas and sun protection options at the Patio Design Center, in San José del Cabo. (624 130 7202) where you will find state-of-the-art shaders that you will be happy to have. And being cool and fashionable is impossible without sporting the proper sunglasses. At Sunglass Island, you’ll find no fewer than 25 premium brands of shades, including Oakley, Mont Blanc, Prada, Burberry, Ray Ban, and Maui Jim. Sunglass Island has two convenient locations in Cabo San Lucas, one on Blvd. Marina, the other in Puerto Paraíso.

Show off all your stylish new attire and trendy accessories at Médano Beach; while lounging around that fabulous resort pool; or as you relax on deck of a leisurely cruise. But, remember, the accessory you’ll always want to carry for your day of fun in the sun is that SPF lotion! You’ll be the envy of everyone during the day in your new vacation clothes, and have that enviable vacation glow in the evening for your Cabo nights.
