Los Cabos Magazine - Issue #15 - Winter 2008 - Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, Mexico

So, you’ve traveled all around México, or at least to a few of its resort towns, and picked up some souvenirs and other trinkets sold on the beaches and in corner shops. You may be wondering why they all look the same. The answer is simple: most of the products come from the same place. While items found for sale in and around tourist spots are usually from México, they all too often are not from the area in which they are being sold.

Cities like Guadalajara, México City, and Oaxaca account for the vast majority of products sold in prime vacation spots, including Los Cabos. Ironically, that Los Cabos t-shirt you see about town has very little to do with Los Cabos. Clothing, crafts, art, and home furnishings found locally very rarely originate here. Having said that, however, many businesses are rethinking their purchasing strategies, opting to stock shelves with things from all over Baja. Find food and wine, décor, and body care products, created in Baja, by visiting the following stores.

Food & Wine
Tutto Bene is the place to go in Cabo for that exotic, fine, and organic food item. From crackers and cheeses, chocolate bars, and preserves, this place, located on Marina Boulevard, has products that no other grocer in the area carries. Delicious organic preserves produced in San José del Cabo by Cocina Colibri, are made with local organic fruits and vegetables. You’ll find jalapeño jellies, antipasto, mango jams and chutneys, and more. What’s most impressive, though, is Tutto Bene’s selection of wines. In addition to wines imported from the United States, Italy, Chile, and Argentina, they also offer many options of national labels. These include Monte Xanic, one of the pioneers among México’s winemakers, whose varieties are made from grapes grown in the Valle de Guadalupe region in the northern part of the Baja Peninsula, and Valmar, a winemaker from Ensenada. Home Décor
Serving individual homeowners and luxury hotels throughout Los Cabos is Diseño Mexicano (Mexican Design). Situated between Costco and the CFE on the Tourist Corridor, this shop specializes in just about everything related to decoration and details for the indoors. Window treatments, bedding, custom-made furniture, and even interior design consultation services are available here. Most of the items come from México’s mainland, but products from as near as La Paz, are also up for grabs. Work featured by sculptor Braulio Hernandez, which focuses on whales, is made from mesquite wood root and other types of wood, all of which were found locally. (624) 147-5626.

Body Care
Having one of the longest lists of Baja-made products around Los Cabos, Baja Body Deli is a wonderland of things for pampering someone, or yourself. With custom-scented shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, body sprays, creams, and burning oils available in a variety of over 75 fragrances, there’s something here for every person and every occasion. Capture your corporation or business’ image with a customized creation of burning oils or incense. Ease chronic pain or aching muscles with compresses filled with special blends of herbs and plants found in the mountains surrounding Los Cabos. From damiana, papaya leaves, stinging nettle, and tree bark, all of it is hand picked by the owners of Baja Body Deli, who have extensive knowledge about the beneficial properties of everything they use. In addition to bath and spa products, which they custom make for several Los Cabos’ resorts, this downtown Cabo shop also carries pajamas and other sleepwear made right in Cabo. All salt scrubs, exfoliating shower gels, and products using salts are made using salt from Baja’s Guerrero Negro mines. Dream pillows, filled with two bags containing fragrant oils and herbs, are covered in beautiful fabrics and made locally as well. (624) 122-2690.

Stop by any of these Los Cabos businesses to pick up a little bit of Baja and explore what else they have to offer. By purchasing locally made products and gifts, you’re sure to leave with souvenirs not found in other parts of México and ones that capture the essence of Baja.
